General

The foundation was established based on the will of Georg Ehrnrooth, honorary mining counsellor, dated 7 May 1995 and the charter of foundation by Ella Ehrnrooth, the wife of the former, dated 26 October 1935. The basic capital of the foundation consists of the assets bequeathed and donated by the Ehnrooths for this purpose, which have accumulated since then. The foundation is entitled to receive donations and bequests.

Purpose

The purpose of the foundation is to promote scientific research and literary activities. The foundation carries out this purpose by giving out grants and contributions to scientists and people operating in the literary field and by supporting scientific institutes and institutions. Grants are mainly given to Finnish citizens or institutes and institutions operating in Finland, and decisions are based on proposals presented to the board of trustees or applications addressed to it. The board of trustees may ask statements from experts for distributing a grant.

Grounds for granting

The Ella and Georg Ehrnrooth Foundation primarily distributes grants for postdoctoral scientific research work of younger scholars with a doctor’s degree provided that the recipient of the grant is at least partially on leave of absence. The grant may also be given for completing the doctoral thesis (however, not in medicine or the so-called exact sciences) in which case a written recommendation from the instructor is desirable. Grants are not given in the fields covered by the Magnus Ehrnrooth foundation; that is, mathematics, astronomy, physics and chemistry (incl. biochemistry and medical chemistry). The grant period may also be 2 to 3 years. Grants are not given for acquisition of equipment, printing expenses or mere congress trips.

Please read carefully through the instructions. The instructions should be followed when applying for and recieving a grant. Please pay special attention to the following:

  • Leave of absence (at least partial) is required for the research period
  • The grants are for young scientists
  • Doctoral degree required (as an exception, completion of doctoral thesis, see announcement)
  • The applicant must report other grants or allocations applied and received elsewhere for the same research project
  • As a rule no allocations for mere trips abroad
  • Not granted for equipment or acquisition of material
  • Not granted if the applicant receives “researcher’s pay”.

  • Application period

    Ends on the 28th February.
